Tunafish and cats

       tuna2.jpg  Tunafish And Cats

Most cats love tunafish of course, but there are risks in letting them indulge on a regular basis. Feeding your cat or kitten tuna can result in vitamin deficiency and other health problems. A diet of only tuna can lead to vitamin E deficiency and a condition called steatitis. Symptoms of this condition are poor appetite, fever, skin sensitivity, poor coat condition, pain, and discomfort when moving around. Tuna made for people is nutritionally deficient in several other essential vitamins and minerals. Vitamin k (needed for blood clotting) does not function properly in cats fed exclusively tuna. Enzymes in red tuna can cause thiamine deficiency. Tunafish also has a high level of magnesium which can increase the risk of stones and crystals forming in the urinary tract. Tuna flavored cat food is fine for cats, but human tuna in large quantities is not. A very small amount given on a rare occasion is probably ok as long as the cat's main diet is a well-balanced cat food.
